Yea I decided to try your podcast.

Yea that dialogue we were engaging in on sidfaiwu, honestly it was unfair of me to start on that line of argument. I don’t believe any of you faith and I do find large swaths of it overtly offensive. Still this is not grounds for bringing this kind of thing up. I apologize for losing my cool in this way.

I kind of like Jesus from a secular perspective. He represented a train of thought that I think was developing in Judaism that would serve to bring them out of the barbarous mentality that was pervasive at that time.

I don’t think he was the best the ancient world had to offer but still. My attitude towards reality is fairly strong, I find the myths developed around the person or character (I’m not certain he lived at all) detracts seriously from what message he did have. That’s what I meant by offended by mythologizing.

In fact think of it yourself. Pretend that Jesus was just a man, that he performed no miracles, was not the messiah and was often wrong about things. I think this strengthens his message, but more than that it presents a richer narrative. Not just in Jesus (I avoid using Christ, I think it’s incorrect) but in the entire body of evolving thought at the time.

anywho, we won’t see eye to eye on this and I don’t expect to. Happy to join you on this podcast.

I’m not sure if it compresses, but it probably does. I’ve been happy with the results.

Here’s my typical effects path for voice: NR -> EQ -> special effects (if desired) -> normalize -> compression/limiting

If there are multiple voices, as there are in audio dramas, I would perform these steps separately to each part making sure the noise sample I use is from the voice part I’m applying the reduction to. I would then hand-adjust the volumes of each voice part if necessary (usually not needed if the last two steps are performed correctly). I would then apply EQ (perhaps) and more compression (definitely) to the mix-down.

Have you tried using Levelator separately on each voice and again on the mix-down?

And re: Matt and guilt, I think you’ll get more of that. He carries more than his share.

There are some amplitude issues now. It doesn’t effect the quality as much as the noise did. The most common cause of that is not keeping your distance from the mic consistent and/or changing the direction you speak. There could be other causes. Question: did you reduce the noise after you set the volume levels?

I love how you decided to handle Matt’s “taking stock” of the situation. The setting and his realizations were perfect and believable. It may not be his in his character, but I’d like to have heard the guilt he must feel written about more explicitly.

But over all, I think your writing has improved quite a bit with Legion. Keep up the great work.

The plot also started picking up with the introduction of the villains and they mystery surrounding their plans. I can’t wait to hear more.

I’m also thoroughly impressed with your use of the music in this episode.

The ambient noise/reverb are good ideas. I’ll have to play with that some. Part of the problem with my parts is my mic level is still so low (even with the improved mic/board) that when the software levels it artifacts get in. Don’t know what to do with that.

Good point on the he said/she said. I needed it in part one to differentiate between characters. Now, not so much.

As usual I have a few suggestions. Some of them are just brainstorming ideas, so take them for what they’re worth. First, get that Shawn guy some acting lessons and get him to reduce the noise for his parts. Also, your parts could use some denoising as well. You have the some white noise in the background.

Aside from reducing noise, one way to give the various parts more cohesiveness is to add a 2nd track that is simply ambient sound. Place a mic in a large, quiet place (like an attic or basement) and record a few minutes of ’silence’. Layer this onto, and especially across the different parts to give the illusion that the speakers are all in the same place.

Another way to increase cohesiveness is to add very mild reverb to each part. For a realistic effect, you could vary the type and amount of reverb according to the environment the characters are in – little to none for outdoor scenes (perhaps a little plate reverb if they are standing close to a wall), small room reverb for indoor conversations, and lots of reverb for those upcoming cave scenes

One note on writing vs. reading with actors is that attribution is unnecessary. For instance, take the line “‘I’ve got that covered,’ Robin said.” Well, it was kind of obvious that Robin had said that since we just heard her. It would have been better to just let her continue.

Maybe I’ll download this episode and play around a bit to see what works…

Stephen does a great job with his show. I hope he gets a few more listeners thanks to this. Looks like he’s gotten at least two.

In a way I’ll miss not voicing more, but hearing my volunteers give voice to my characters is also wicked cool. So it’s a trade off.

I enjoyed the interview. I had no idea that you have a background in singing. I also agree with Stephen and yourself – Sanders is a cool villain. I wouldn’t give up his voice either. I’ll be checking out Tea and Chat more as well.

Here is a critique, I hope you can try not to take it personally but use it in the spirit it was intended(which is to give you an opinion on how to make it better, at least for me.) :0)

The writing is superb. I can visually this written on a page and it is as good as anything else I want to stack it up against in this genre.

The reading as you have said is a bit rough. I completely understand that this is a first time through and you are not presenting it as a polished piece. With that understanding the biggest suggestion I would make is to emphasize the difference between your characters spoken voices and your scene narration. There have been times when they have run together for me and it takes my brain a second to catch that your character is no longer speaking and the narration has begun once more. Your aussie voice is quite good.

The story is very gripping and I am looking forward to catching the rest of the episodes. Do you have an idea of how many there will be until the story is finished?
